Vitamin E (Tocopherol) belongs to the group of fat soluble vitamins together with vitamin A, D and K. It acts in nature as a powerful antioxidant within cells - particularly with lipids. In nature Tocopherols occur as a mix of alpha, beta, delta and gamma isomers, whereas synthetically produced vitamin E consists of DL-alpha-Tocopherol. In commercial applications Tocopherols are divided into two groups: 1) As an antioxidant to prevent rancidity in fats/oils. 2) As a nutrients in food products or in dietary supplement applications. In this case vitamin E is converted into its acetate form, which exhibits significantly better stability in such applications. |
